What is a Scientist?

This is our big science question. Today we started a WHOLE WEEK of science! We want to discover what a scientist is. Without talking to anybody else, we drew a picture of what we thought a scientist looked like, and wrote about what a scientist does.

Today we started with a virtual plane trip to Antarctica! We had to get in groups of three, then went outside to get our virtual clothes to wear on the big trip. We were "specially selected scientists" about to go to Antarctica for the summer. We put our lugguge in the hold (really our class ramp rails)... then entered the plane (that used to be our classroom!) MurRen checked our passports at the door. We had to sit down and put our seatbelts on. Just as we were about to take off, Mrs Tooley came in (through our plane door!) She invited 3 real life visitors to our school from China. Now the plane was quite full, but then PutLea from Room 2 ALSO came into our plane... so we invited her to come with us. She wanted to study penguins! While we were on the "plane", we looked at photos on the whiteboard of Antarctica and McMurdo Base. After lunch we watched a movie about scientists at Antarctica, then we discussed our ideas, and recorded them in our topic book.

Pictures will come tomorrow, but here is the website with interesting videos and photos to look at: http://www.coolantarctica.com - you should take a look yourself!

I found today quite interesting. I liked going to Antarctica!

Alliteration Poetry

We have been exploring lots of different poetry formats, and playing with words. We all sit in table groups called "Learning Rocketships" ...because the tables sort of make the shape of a rocket!

This is our group's first attempt at Alliterative Poetry based on our names
(of course, we have substituted our real names with our secret code Internet names):

Wizard ShuWer went wow!!!

Awesome WhaAly actively ate!!!

Miss Magic Marvelous GilMan!!!

Incredible Seasons

Yesterday the "Incredibles" reading group wrote a poem about the best things about "seasons". Firstly we read a Journal poem, then we worked out the rhyming pattern, and what each line was about in each verse, so we could try to write our own poem. Once we did our first draft together, we proofread the poem (by fixing spelling mistakes), then we edited the poem (by finding even better words use).

This is the poem:

Incredible Seasons

I walk to the best school with my brother
Sun smiles across the cloudless sky
Birds chirping drowsily as they fly
I can't wait to see my friends

Training for my competitive hockey games
Warm coloured leaves crunching on the ground
Wind swirling all around
My team is awesome and we will win!

I need my warm scarf and my cosy gloves
Wind gusting through my hair
Thunderstorms give me such a scare
Snuggling up at home curled up in my blankets

I kick my school bag into my wardrobe
Sparkling tinsel and glitter spilled on the floor
A colourful wreath on the door
I cant wait for christmas!!!

The Presentation

For Social studies Room 1 has been studying Early Maori life. We learnt so much we felt that we had to share it with our parents. So on the 17 of September 2009 we hosted a Social studies night. 100 people came!
It was a marvellous event.

We showed the parents our BOB HERE claymation movie we made in Term 2. We made the movie in ONLY 2 WEEKS! You can see it further down our Blog if you want to.
The parents were hugely impressed.

Next was our Gingerbread Photo Story - this showed pictures of our gingerbread baking - part of our maths unit on Measurement.
One small child in the audience said "Awwww - that's beautiful", and we all laughed!

We have 9 kapahaka students in our class. They dressed up in our school's precious piupiu and sang and performed Haere Mai to introduce our Early Maori Life part of the presentation.
Then we presented our Early Maori Life slide shows. They were fantastic.
One of the students didn't have any of her group there but she was very brave and presented it by herself. She did a great job.
We finished the night off with our teacher, MooDeb's fantastic last speech.
The parents want us to have presentation evenings more often!

Our next challenge is to convert our Powerpoint presentations into Moviemaker so we can play them here on our Blog. We also have some photos.... good things take time!
(Luckily we have an expert in our class - Maadom!)

Kaimoana work sheet

In Term 3 we have been learning about Early Maori Life for Social Studies.

Our reading programme has been excellent - we have chosen articles to read out of Journals all about Maori life.

This is one of the worksheets we have done, after we finished our buddy reading. We have been learning to write proper sentences using key words from the question and the text.

How To Make a Sundial

Our (which is On'eCod, Mormit GORTHO and On'e Cab) extention maths group has made a sundial for our time study.

  • First we put a stick in the ground.
  • We drew a circle around the stick.
  • Then we numberd the hours around the stick.
After you have done this you watch the shadow move to the hours you have drawn.
We tried it and we have to say that it was a grand sucess!

The Cell Phone Drama

A mysterious person turned up at my front door. I asked “What is your name?” She said it was “Kylie Anderson.”

She asked what my name was and I said it was “Dayna, Dayna Mathews.”

Kylie said“Can I play with you?" But Dayna was going to the movies.

Dayna said “Im going to the movies”.

“Can I come with you?” moped Kylie silently.

“Sure” said Dayna. “We are watching Life Is A Green Life”.

Off they went to the movies. “Oh I just need to get my cell phone" said Dayna, so she went back to her house to get her cell phone. Dayna came back outside with a smile on her face. “lets go” chirped Dayna.

Later at the movies Daynas cell phone went off. “Oh no” said Dayna and the usher sent them out.

Kylie and Dayna decided to go to the mall then go home .They had peered at all the garments they decided to go back to the movies again.

Dayna said “I'll remember to turn my cell phone off this time”.

“That’s a great idea” gloomed Kylie.

“We will watch 'Under The Sky'”. In two hours and forty four minutes they went home and on the way Dayna bought some sweets. When they got home Kylie said “I had a great time today. Maybe we could spend some more time together.”

“Yes” bellowed Dayna.

“What about on Saturday” said Kylie.

“Yes” said Dayna.

On Saturday morning Dayna got up and was really exited about Kylie coming over. An hour later Kylie phoned up Dayna and said she would ask her mum if it was OK if she went to her house instead.

“Mum” said Dayna “can I go to Kylies house instead of her coming over here.

“Yes you can" said Mum.

“Yes I can! I'll be over in about 15 minutes OK" Dayna said excitedly to Kylie.

“ok" said kylie. "Good bye."

Te Waka (Questions and Answers)

This term in Reading, we are all using non-fiction texts in Journals about Maori life in New Zealand. We can choose which text we use, and we do the following tasks each week:

  • Choose a text with our buddy
  • Read silently, with a buddy, to a buddy and listen to a buddy
  • Answer comprehension questions independently
  • Do Guided Reading with the teacher once a week in groups.
Here is an example of our work - we are trying to find key words in questions, then key words in the text, then write proper sentences using all the key words. This shows we understand!

"Te Waka" - School Journal Story Library book
1.The journey in the waka is four days.
2.The maori stone is for everyone who has been on the waka so their hands can be laid on the top of the stone.
3.the four young men are from Wakatu Incorperation. Now they all live over in Aotearoa.
4.The National Park they are in is the Tasmin National Park.
5.The boys share huts over night with iwi from Germany,Holland,Argentina and America.
6.The other activities the boys play are touch rugby on the beach and splashing through the water.
7.The iwi that went on the waka trip could have learnt how to work together and play together fairly.
8.The maori meanings for these words are:
Hoe-means a paddle,Kaumatua-old person or iwi,Rangatahi-young men,Koro-means grandfather,Tangata whenua-means iwi who come from here,Iwi-means people,Tapapa-means lean forword.

Deep Deep Trouble

On a dark stormy night Constable Dayna Peek was driving her car around the city to see what people were doing. Suddenly she saw a boy with a bag on his back heading to the bank. Then the boy came out of the bank with heaps and heaps of money in the his bag and Dayna saw him and got out of her car and chased him and jumped on him and said “WHATS YOUR NAME?”“My name is Tom don’t hurt me”. Then she got of him and called his mum and she said to his mum “your child has just robbed the bank.”“Are you sure?” said his mum.“Yes I’m sure” she said sadly. Then he went home and as soon as his mum saw him she said to “Tom, you’re grounded!”“Why mum?”“Because you robbed the bank” cried mum “GO TO YOUR ROOM NOW!”“O man” said Tom. The next day, he tried that again, but this time Dayna Peek was not looking, and Tom got away with all the money and went to Max and said “look – I got all this money.”“That is a lot of money” said Max. Then Tom got in the car and drove away, but when they were on the driveway, Dayna (the cop) saw Max and Tom with a bag in his hands, and she got out of the car and chased them, but they managed to get in the house and lock the door. However, Dayna broke the window to get in, and she said “you guys have robbed the bank again! You are going to JAIL for robbing the bank TWICE!”“Why? Said Tom “does Max have to go to jail as well?”“No” replied Dayna. Then Max said “Bye Tom, I will see you in SIX YEARS!”Six years later….Max said “Hi Tom. Was it cool there in jail?”“No – I got punched in the face by another robber!” replied Tom.“I will take you to the doctor” said Max.“Nooooooo – I will be fine” replied Tom.“OK, I will leave you here while I go to the doctor for an appointment”.“NO I DO NOT WANT TO GO TO THE DOCTOR” shouted Tom.“Why?” asked Max.“I don’t want to go to the doctor because last time I went to the doctor the nurse did a mistake and STABBED ME IN THE EYE!!!” replied Tom “but luckily the vitrious humour didn’t come out!”And Max rang the doctor again and said to the doctor “come to our house while he is not looking” said the Doctor.Tom screamed “why did you call the doctors again?”“Because you have a sore eye” explained Max. Then the doctor came, and he brought oxygen masks, just in case Tom ran out of oxygen while the doctor was doing surgery on his cheek. Three minutes later, the surgery was finished, and Tom said “that wasn’t too bad. I think I will go to the doctor next time I need surgery.”

The Smart Pilot

On a happy Friday afternoon Freddy and Eddie were at a movie theatre watching a movie called The Smart Pilot. The movie was about a pirate and his beloved gold tooth trying to find some treasure. He had a million dollar map, and he sailed upon an enormous boat.

Suddenly (in the movie), an Air New Zealand plane came vertically down and hit the water. The pirate got excited and said “Wonder what that scallywag has on board?” The pirate got his togs on and Scooby dived into the deep blue water. A minute later his head popped up out of the sea and he got back on his boat. His arms were full of gold pieces and his face had a metre long smile on it. While the pirate was staring away at his gold, the pilot surfaced and shouted at the pirate “Could you please let me on board.” But the silly pirate ignored him, and sailed away.

The cunning pilot was ready for the pirate to sail away, so while the pirate was at the wheel the pilot jumped on board. Strongly the pilot took off his belt and whacked the pirate unconscious. He then sent the silly pirate overboard into the unforgiving sea. The pilot was a qualified sailor, so he quickly found land and lived happily ever after. But as for the pirate… |

Arthur and the Dragon ( new ending)

Amanda was on her way to the mountain, she was swooping and diving in and out of the clouds. She found a dark humid cave at the top of the mountain and made her self a soft bed ,and tried to go to sleep, but she was feeling that no one loved her. She stood up because she heard shouting and looked outside the cave and saw a bright light. She flew down closer to get a better view. There was a fire in the town so Amanda flew at top speed into the town.
She saw the towns people with buckets and hoses trying to put out the fire. They were running around screaming and shouting 'Fire Fire help'!!!
Amanda saw that the old peoples home was on fire, it was burning wildly. She flew quickly to the fire and snorted the flames into her wet nostrils, the fire was then under control.

Arthur came down and saw Amanda with the townspeople, cheering and slapping her on the back. The town council then said Amanda can stay.

The Rainy Day Problem

One day at the Peeks house Miss Moss the scientist was trying to put a video in the video player but it kept coming out and did not work.
"Well lets go to Dick Smith," said Miss Moss.
"But it's raining," said Mrs Peek.
"I will go and get my super umbrella," said Miss Moss.
"What car are we going in," asked Miley Peek the one with brown hair.
What a beautiful young 6 year old girl thought Miss Moss.
"We are going in Miss Moss's Porsche," said Mrs Peek.
When they got to Dick Smith they bumped into their friend Miss Hilton who works there as a sales assistant. Miss Moss asked, "Do you have a video player for my laptop and the TV?"
"Yes, over this way," said Miss Hilton.
When they saw the video player for the laptop they said, "Yes, we will buy it."
"Now for the video player for the TV we have a special - you get a 32 inch plasma TV free!" said Miss Hilton.
"We will buy it," Miss Moss and Mrs Peek said together.
They went to the counter. "That will be $200.00," said Miss Hilton.
Later, Miss Hilton, Miley Peek, Miss Moss and Mrs Peek left the shop to go home. They drove very fast in the Porsche sports car. They sang along with Gimme Gimme A Man After Midnight by ABBA. It was fun.
When they got home Miss Moss watched a video about how the all the forests are being cut down to make paper. It was rated M. This meant Miley was not allowed to watch it.
Miley was very unhappy and had a tantrum. She stomped her feet. She screamed and shouted. She threw herself on the floor.
Mrs Peek sent Miley to her bedroom. Mrs Peek then wrote a note in her diary.
Miss Moss and Miss Hilton heard Miley singing nasty songs. Miley sang, "I'm the coolest girl in school yey yey yey."
"Hey watch your language!" yelled Miss Moss and Miss Hilton.
